Investment to tee up hundreds of homes, bypasses, employment land and improvements to cultural landmarks

Some £570 million will be set aside for 50 Derbyshire regeneration schemes which will help tee up hundreds of new homes, town bypasses, employment land and improvements to cultural landmarks.

Derbyshire County Council is supporting the funding over the next few years for a string of major schemes – some of which are already underway.

It said they will help create new housing and job opportunities across the East Midlands county, with money coming from the council, government pots and local private and public sector partners.

Cabinet member for infrastructure Coun Carolyn Renwick said: “This regeneration programme demonstrates good growth in Derbyshire with major regeneration projects across the county to support job creation and keep Derbyshire moving.

“These projects follow the successful completion of a £13 million county council-led scheme to build a new road linking Woodville and Swadlincote, cutting congestion and unlocking employment land.

“We’re proud to be a driving force for regeneration and levelling up in Derbyshire and welcome much-needed investment from Government to improve our county’s economic prospects.”

Funding for projects that are already underway include £6 million for the Ashbourne airfield expansion, opening up land for employment and housing and adding a new roundabout on the A52.

Almost £11 million is being lined up for a new road into Chesterfield Station, with a planning application now in, while £2.4 million will be put into a new roundabout and access to a housing development in the Fairfield/Hogshaw area of Buxton, along with a new a section of the White Peak Loop cycle trail.

The council is backing plans for £125 million to go into reclamation works and construction of a 3.7-mile road connecting Chesterfield with Staveley, opening up land for jobs and housing, while £55 million would be put into roads to support the South Derby Growth Zone, making way for commercial development and housing at the Infinity Garden Village. An outline business case for funding is due to be submitted to Government later this year.

Some £35 million could be out into Elvaston Castle; £20 million-plus in the Ashbourne Relief Road; around £50 million to improve access to Shirebrook; and a similar figure to find a solution to the problem of a major road crossing the Scheduled Ancient Monument at Swarkestone Causeway, across the River Trent.

The Staveley Town Deal Investment Plan could get £25 million, as could the Long Eaton Town Deal Investment Plan, while Chesterfield Borough Council is leading a £20 million project to improve the town centre.

Derbyshire County Council is also supporting a bid for £25 million to build on work already done to establish the UK’s only inland freeport at East Midlands Airport.
