It’s always a delightful evening when we go out to the movies and it reminds me of when I was a young girl and I would get 25 cents to go with my friends. At the Troyes Cinema at Garrison Petawawa, it’s so much fun to see a senior perform a handstand for the audience.

When summer arrives and it’s backyard barbecue and lazy afternoons by the pool time, it’s easy to forget that hot weather can be dangerous, especially for seniors. People over the age of 65 are more prone to dehydration and heat stroke and their bodies have more difficulty adjusting to extreme temperatures. These issues can be magnified by medical conditions and medications, making it even more important for seniors and their caregivers to stay safe in hot weather.

Drink water even if you’re not thirsty, stay cool and stay out of the sun. You should wear a hat and use sun screen. Dress appropriately, wear light coloured clothing that is not tight or restrictive. Avoid using the oven as cooking can rapidly increase the temperature in your home. Save walks, gardening and other activities for morning or evening hours when the temperature is cooler. If you enjoy the outdoors, find a shady spot under a tree or under a canopy.

There are still lots of fun things to participate in during the summer months at the Silver Threads Seniors Club. Junko’s fitness classes take place Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. We are inviting a younger age group to come out and join Junko’s classes as participation has somewhat slowed during these months. If you are interested, phone Faye in the office at 613-687-6574. More people means more classes so come out and give it a try. Junko’s class will not be available from July 10 to July 16.

Some of the ladies are doing dot art in the activity room upstairs on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. This is an interesting and fun class.

Bid euchre, bingo, yoga, and regular euchre, plus the fitness room are all available during the week.

We have raffle tickets on a beautiful quilt and you can purchase tickets at the office.

We continue to hear about scammers going after seniors. Do not send money, buy gift cards or get involved with crypto currency over the phone. These people are after your hard-earned money. Hang up and do not engage these people on the phone. If you do get scammed, get in touch with your local police.

We have a safe and modern building with air conditioning, automatic doors, an elevator, plenty of parking and tea and coffee. Bring in your stamped receipts from the local Hyska’s Your Independent Grocer store and place them in the boxes provided upstairs and downstairs. We have a container for local food bank donations. There are lots of books and puzzles available for seniors upstairs.

Check out the many activities offered at the Petawawa Civic Centre and Petawawa Public Library. On Thursday, June 30 the container marketing plaza is opening for the season in the newly paved parking lot near the Kin Hut and mini putt area at the Civic Centre.

Shop local and support our businesses and their staff.
