The Etowah County Commission on Tuesday approved the purchase of the old Baker Tire property on Forrest Avenue, contingent on the sale of warehouse property owned by the county on Thomas Drive.

Chief Administrative Officer Shane Ellison said the commission will pay $875,000 for the property at 712 Forrest Ave., which includes the shop and two warehouse buildings. The purchase is dependent on sale of the property at 141 Thomas Drive to NantBioPlastics LLC, he said, for $1.5 million.

The Etowah County Sheriff's Office and the County Commission have used the Thomas Drive warehouse for storage; that will be moved the property on Forrest Avenue.

Ellison said the sale of the Thomas Drive property will allow NantBioPlastics to expand in Etowah County, on property convenient to its current location.

Commissioner Craig Inzer Jr. voted against the sale.

Also in Tuesday's meeting, the announcement that Advanced Disposal will have open top containers from 7 a.m. to noon Aug. 6 at for locations was cause for discussion.

Inzer questioned whether the company that contracts for residential garbage would have containers there until noon, or if it would bring containers then say "we're done" when those were full. At the site in his district, Whorton Bend Volunteer Fire Department, he said last time there were containers, four were filled up.

Ellison said the contract required two containers at each of the four locations.

Inzer suggested the availability be described as 7 a.m. until containers are full.

Container locations are: Leeth Gap and Sardis Road across from the old County Shop; U.S. Highway 278 and Alabama Highway 132; Whorton Bend Volunteer Fire Department; and Gadsden High School at U.S. 411 North.

The containers are for residential household trash for Etowah County residents. Tires, batteries, appliances and hazardous waste are not accepted.
